Powell, Ohio's Jo Ann Dowell Honored as 2010 TWHBEA Performance Horse Ambassador

At its annual awards banquet, held December 3rd in Lewisburg, Tennessee, the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders' and Exhibitors' Association (TWHBEA) honored Jo Ann Dowell of Powell, Ohio, with its prestigious Performance Horse Ambassador Award. Presented annually, this award recognizes a member of the Tennessee Walking Horse community that has gone above and beyond in their efforts to support and promote the performance Tennessee Walking Horse. As part of the award presentation, which as made by TWHBEA Performance Horse Vice President Ty Irby, the biography of Mrs. Dowell included below was read.

This year's Performance Horse Ambassador began her Tennessee Walking Horse journey over 40 years ago when she and her husband, Glenn, decided that it was time to buy their horse-crazy daughter, Sue Ann, a horse of her own. That horse was a Tennessee Walking Horse mare. And so JoAnn Dowell's journey began.

It wasn't long before the Dowells were regulars on the show circuit in Ohio. They started out at White Star Farms with trainer Tommy Plott. Later they had horses with Polly Stout and then with Winky Groover back at White Star.

Later still, following a short break from the walking horse business while Sue Ann attended college, the family began placing their horses with trainers in Tennessee. Over the years they built a tremendous show string that includes such greats as Prowler's Princess, Major League, Trip My Trigger, Heat Of The Moment, Mighty Maxx, Mighty Maxx A Million and One Bad Hombre. As they became successful at the larger show of the Southeast, they continued to support their local shows and in doing so they continued to promote the performance horse in Ohio.
In addition to her vast contributions to the show circuits of the Midwest and Southeast, Jo Ann Dowell has made an impact as a breeder. Her stallions have produced successful show horses in nearly every division.

She is also an active industry philanthropist, supporting shows and programs that benefit the performance Tennessee Walking Horse. She is a longtime and generous sponsor of the National Futurity and the Celebration, she is a loyal supporter of each of the industry publications, and she has been active both locally in Ohio and nationally in promoting the breed she loves.

It is with great pride that we present the 2010 Performance Horse Ambassador of the Year Award to JoAnn Dowell.
